Response to "Spotlight on social scene

Dear Editor:
Has anyone noticed the irony of having a letter in the middle of your October 18 edition regarding the alcohol-related death of Jackie Nilsson, while on the front page, you run an article called "Spotlight on social scene," that seems to make light of the whole drinking problem? Recall some of the quotes from the article: Parties with "100-150 people and gallons of alcohol," or "some kids would wake up as early as 8:00 a.m. to start drinking." And on it goes. The phrase that keeps coming to my mind is: You just don't get it! Too many young folks continue to think that drinking excessively, to the point that one is out of control, is a cool thing to do. Until we call a halt to this fascination with alcohol, we will continue to have tragedies.

Sincerely,

Sam Baumgarten,
